LUNG BIOPSY COMPARISON

There are several factors to consider when deciding on a lung biopsy procedure.  You and your doctor should discuss all the options and determine which one is best for you.

A biopsy using the inReach™ System provides a diagnosis rate of 69-74% of lesions deep in the lungs and 94-100% in lymph nodes.6,7 Given that many lesions are benign (non-cancerous), inReach may be right for you, helping you avoid more invasive procedures.

Below is a comparison chart of leading biopsy procedures that can help you discuss diagnosis options with your doctor.

Description

Provides assistance in obtaining tissue samples using minimally invasive technology to reach lesions deep in the lungs.

Tissue sample obtained using tiny forceps passed through a bronchoscope into the lungs.

Tissue sample obtained by passing a small needle between the ribs and inserting into lesion.

Tissue sample obtained by making a lengthy incision made between ribs. Biopsy tool then used to reach the lesion and often a chest tube is inserted to drain air, fluid and blood from chest cavity.

Tissue sample obtained by making small incisions between the ribs and inserting a telescopic video camera. A biopsy tool is then used to obtain the tissue sample.

No tissue sample taken. However, you may be asked to have CT-scans every 6-9 months.

Complications

Very low risk of pneumothorax.

Because a tissue sample is not always obtainable, other surgical procedures may be needed to diagnose tissue.

Diagnosis can be obtained, but with a 37%-57%8 risk of pneumothorax or collapsed lung.

Complications due to surgery may include infection, bleeding, chronic chest pain and development of other complications.
